English Courses & Overview

Overview

The English Department's goal is to foster critical thinking; clear verbal and written communication; and a lifelong love of literature and learning. Our English courses are aligned with the Common Core Standards and Framework. The standards are composed of objectives for each grade level in the areas of language, critical thinking, speaking, writing, listening and reading, all based on the study of significant literature and non-fiction from various cultures and eras. We teach to those standards, and beyond, by offering rigor at every level of English. Students must pass four years of English to graduate; all courses are two semesters in duration.

Ninth-grade students are initially placed in classes based on their Lexile scores and teacher recommendations. Students scoring above 880 Lexile are placed in our Multicultural Literature and Voice course. Students who need extra support in English based on their Lexile scores have an additional support class. However, students can exit the support classes based on future Lexile scores and teacher recommendations.
